June Joys

Hello lovely people,

Shocking that you are hearing from me again so soon, but I wanted to plug some things that are happening in June and some are like this week so here goes!

My birthday month has arrived (hello fellow Geminis) bringing with it a delightful array of cultural happenings across the East Midlands. From restaurant bargains, to thought-provoking theatre and cute bee encounters, there's something for everyone. Here's what's catching my eye this month:

🍽️ Nottingham Restaurant Week: 2–8 June 🍽️

Hungry for something new? Nottingham Restaurant Week is back from 2–8 June, with over 50 restaurants, cafés, and bars offering fixed-price menus at £10, £20, £25, and £30. It’s the perfect excuse to try that place you always walk past or fall back in love with an old fav without bankrupting yourself in the process.

Tuck into these highlights:

  • Pizzamisu – Authentic Neapolitan pizzas crafted with care (and flour flown in from Italy). Don’t skip the tiramisu—it’s in the name for a reason.

  • No.Twelve – A plant-based fine dining experience tucked inside a former lace factory. Inventive, elegant, and ideal for herbivores and omnivores alike.

  • Fellows, Morton & Clayton – A proper pub on the canal serving comfort food with a polished twist. The scotch eggs are borderline spiritual.

  • Kushi-ya – A Japanese skewer spot hidden away on Cannon Court. Think grilled brilliance, clever small plates, and a very cool vibe.

  • Guided Food Tours – Want someone else to do the choosing? There are four themed walking tours including Tapas with a Twist and Pan-Asian Rice and Spice—a curated bite-sized adventure through the city.

You can browse all the participating venues and book tables through the It’s in Nottingham app. Go forth and feast. Your tastebuds deserve a treat.

🎭 Pig Heart Boy at Curve Theatre, Leicester: 10–14 June 🎭

Adapted by Winsome Pinnock from Malorie Blackman's acclaimed novel, Pig Heart Boy takes the stage at Curve Theatre from 10–14 June. Directed by Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu, this production delves into the ethical complexities of medical science through the story of 13-year-old Cameron, who undergoes a pioneering heart transplant. A must-see for audiences ages 9 and up. Winsome Pinnock is one of our great dramatists, and seeing her work brought to life on stage is always something special. Loads of tickets are fifteen quid.

🐝 See the Bees at Bosworth Battlefield: 7 June 🐝

Enjoy a buzz (sorry) at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre on Saturday 7 June during Big Green Week. 'See the Bees' offers 30-minute sessions where resident beekeeper Chris shares insights into historical honey uses, followed by a chance to don a bee suit and observe the hives.

Sessions run from 11:00 am to 3:15 pm, priced at £2 per person. Suitable for ages 5 and up, it's a sweet outing for families and nature enthusiasts alike. More info here.

🎉 Derby Caribbean Carnival's 50th Anniversary: 28 June

Get ready to celebrate a vibrant milestone, as the Derby Caribbean Carnival marks its 50th anniversary on 28 June. Hosted by the Derby West Indian Community Association, this dazzling event at Derby Theatre showcases the infectious energy, artistry, and joy of Caribbean culture. Expect dazzling colours, music, and dance that brings the community together in a spectacular display of unity and heritage.
