My name is Ben. I am a Moana enthusiast, a gemini and a big orca fan. My favourite TV show is Desperate Housewives. I will watch anything with Julia Roberts in it.
I studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating in 2013. During my time at Uni, I also completed the Royal Court Young Writer's Programme and Invitation Only Group.
After that, I went on to work as the Literary Manager at the Old Red Lion Theatre. I established the Old Red Lion Writers' Group and supported two full productions of work that came directly through the department to critical acclaim. Reading lots of different scripts was priceless, as it meant I got to immerse myself in lots of unique voices and discover what I thought worked.
My debut full-length play, CHICKEN DUST was written whilst I was playwright in residence at the Curve Theatre, in my hometown of Leicester. I actually hail from a village just outside of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, which is where Adrian Mole lives. We have one bus an hour and lots of fields. CHICKEN DUST premiered at the Finborough Theatre, before transferring to the Curve as part of their InsideOut Festival in 2015. It's published by Methuen Drama.
The follow up, JELLYFISH, was developed with The National Theatre Studio. It premiered at The Bush Theatre in Summer 2018 and was again published by Methuen Drama. The play was nominated for four Offfies (Most Promising New Playwright, Best Male in a Supporting Role, Best Set Design and Best Sound Design) and was a finalist for Most Promising New Playwright. Additionally, the play was shortlisted for the Writers' Guild Award for Best Play and listed as one of The Stage’s best plays of 2018. JELLYFISH transferred to the National Theatre in Summer 2019.
I was lucky enough to earn a place on Philip Shelley's wonderful 4Screenwriting course in 2016, and the script I wrote on this has helped me get a toe in the door of the world of telly. I am developing projects with Balloon Entertainment, Merman, Bryncoed, Hillbilly, Buccaneer and Red Planet Pictures. I am now under commission to ITV and the BBC, developing original series for them.
I am also dabbling in the world of Radio! It's very fun. In late 2017, I wrote an Afternoon Drama for BBC Radio 4 and completed a shadow scheme with The Archers.
I am always looking to learn new stuff and develop my voice and work on fun things.
